Welcome to this week's edition of Featured, your weekly guide to the most interesting blockchain-based digital objects – across gaming, social, music, media, fashion, AI, immersive environments, and other consumer crypto categories.
This week, we turn the spotlight on dTAO, a fundamental shift in how Bittensor subnets operate and attract capital.
Last month, Bittensor underwent a major upgrade–dTAO. This update allows subnets to become investible for the first time, creating a market-driven system for TAO emissions.
What is dTAO?
Previously, root validators controlled emissions, deciding how much TAO each subnet received. This centralized approach became unsustainable as Bittensor grew. dTAO replaces this system with an open market, where TAO holders dictate value by staking.
Now, subnets earn TAO emissions based on market demand rather than validator decisions. The price of subnet’s Alpha token determines its share of emissions:
📈 Higher Alpha price → More TAO emissions
📉 Lower Alpha price → Fewer TAO emissions
dTAO forces real evaluation of subnets–no more passive TAO holding. The removal of subnet caps is expected to spark experimentation and innovation, with many new projects emerging in AI, scientific research, and machine learning. Explore subnets here.
How to get subnet Alpha tokens
Choose a subnet you’d like to get exposure to
Get a Bittensor-compatible wallet (staking requires TAO)
Stake directly via the Opentensor wallet or use platforms like Backprop Finance or Taostats
Highlighting a few subnets
SN 52 - Tensorplex Dojo → A platform rewarding contributors for labeling and preference data collection.
SN 51 - Celium → Creating a global GPU network for AI, rewarding high-performance contributors.
SN 17 - 404-GEN → AI-powered 3D content generation and synthetic dataset creation for 3D models.
SN 64 - Chutes → Decentralized, serverless GPU compute for AI and batch processing.
If you’re looking to track subnet alpha prices, head to Backprop Finance. You can also:
Stake TAO / receive subnet tokens
